Leanne Brown's "self-love potion" will get you through a rough day - Salon

Image
I think the best kind of food writing is the kind that makes you feel like you've got a friend at your side in the kitchen. From Laurie Colwin to Ella Risbridger to Nigella Lawson, the writers whose recipes I trust the most are the ones whose personal stories I appreciate the most too. Into that company comes Leanne Brown. Brown, who gained attention with her innovative bestseller "Good and Cheap," aptly titles her emancipating latest work "Good Enough. A Cookbook." Written with bracing honesty and intimacy, it's a chronicle of her own real world experiences of working, parenting and getting food on the table even on the most overwhelming, anxiety-producing days. It's an admission of imperfection, and a celebration of self-care. It's also a collection of beautiful, soul-nourishing recipes, like miso-salmon taco bowls and cheesecake pots. I talked to Brown recently about the tyranny of "guilty pleasures,...

Philadelphia 76ers: Joel Embiid has a forever friend in Jose Alvarado - Section 215

Image
Ah, the double-technical; a call so non-commital that nothing much changes in the game but a stop of possession. Normally, when two players are called for a double-tech they get a little angry, get a little annoyed, or simply laugh it off, but in the Philadelphia 76ers' win over the New Orleans Pelicans, the double-technical called on Joel Embiid and rookie two-way guard Jose Alvarado didn't just end like that. No, the call resulted in a… lifelong friendship? Yes, you read that correctly; instead of anger, resentment, annoyance, or animosity, the call might have brought together a pair of players on opposite ends of the NBA spectrum together in a way few other calls could. Why? Because Joel Embiid opted to pay for Jose Alvarado's fine in an act of good faith towards a young, two-way player just now making some money at the NBA level. The Philadelphia 76ers' superstar center passed along some of his fortune. Joel Embiid gets paid roughly $385,114.51 for every game of reg...

Dance and movement therapy holds promise for treating anxiety and depression, as well as deeper psychological wounds - The Conversation US

A few years ago, framed by the skyline of Detroit, a group of about 15 children resettled as refugees from the Middle East and Africa leapt and twirled around, waving blue, pink and white streamers through the air. The captivating scene was powerfully symbolic. Each streamer held a negative thought, feeling or memory that the children had written down on the streamers. On cue and in unison, the children released their streamers into the air, then sat down nearby. Then they gathered up the fallen streamers, which carried their collective struggles and hardships, threw them in a trash can and waved goodbye. The children were participating in a dance therapy activity as part of our team's research program exploring body-based approaches to mental health treatment in people resettled as refugees. In 2017, our lab – the Stress, Trauma and Anxiety Research Clinic – began piloting movement therapies to help address trauma in refugee families. We are learning that movement may ...

Why people aren't as picky in love as they think - BBC News

Image
We assume we choose our life partners very carefully – but research shows we may be less selective in love than we think. Finding a life partner is considered a major milestone – one that requires deliberation and careful assessment. We want someone whose long-term plans match our own: someone to whom we're attracted, someone with whom we feel comfortable sharing our home, finances and, maybe, children. This person is our life partner, after all – naturally, we assume we'll take care with the decision. But it turns out we may be less selective about whom we spend our lives with than we think. Research shows hidden biases mean we'll give people a chance, even if they don't quite meet our criteria.  And when we do pick a partner, we're driven by a psychological tendency called "progression bias" to stay in the relationship, rather than end it. In other words, we're hard-wired to be in a romantic relationship, say psychologists, despite tren...

Mark Epstein on The Zen of Therapy - Tricycle

Image
Mark Epstein, MD, has been exploring the territory where Buddhism and psychotherapy meet for several decades. His many books on the convergence have helped define what amounts to a subgenre in both fields. Epstein's investigation of Buddhism predates his work in psychotherapy, so the dharma has always influenced how he views his interactions with his patients. It was reassuring to him, he says, that he could bring the Buddhist way of listening—simply being with his patients, what he calls simple kindness —into the psychotherapeutic way of listening, and start to use them interchangeably. This interplay is a major theme of his new book The Zen of Therapy: Uncovering a Hidden Kindness in Life (Penguin Press, 2022), in which he reflects on a year's worth of therapy sessions. In this conversation with Tricycle 's editor-in-chief, James Shaheen, Epstein discusses the role of no-self in therapy and the polarity between doing and being, a concept that he attributes to both Donald ...

All grown up, a mentee looks back on Sonoma Valley Mentoring Alliance - Sonoma Index-Tribune

Image
Students who are mentored are more likely to graduate college, less likely to become addicted to harmful substances and report better self-esteem than students who don't have strong adult role models. As January is National Mentoring Month, and the Sonoma Valley Mentoring Alliance marks its 25th year of helping local students, former mentee Janeth Contreras looks back at her years in the program with appreciation. She praised her former mentor, Tina Baldry, for being there for her through a few of life's rough patches and for helping her to make good choices. "Honestly, with her guidance and with her taking me to different activities with the mentoring alliance it opened up opportunities for me and made a great impact on my life, not just in school, but socially as well," Contreras said. Baldry began working with Contreras when she was a fifth-grader at Flowery Elementary School and continued mentoring her through graduation and beyond. Contreras said Baldry was...
