Mayor singles out 6 Cincinnati bars for overcrowding, mask violations - WLWT Cincinnati Posted: 31 Jul 2020 10:54 AM PDT Mayor singles out 6 Cincinnati bars for overcrowding, mask violations Show Transcript WITH FOUR CASES. THE TOTAL CONFIRMED CASES IS 3942. THE MEDIAN AGE IS 36. CURRENT HOSPITALIZATIONS, 64. WITH THE LARGEST NUMBER OCCURRING AMONG INDIVIDUAL 60 TO 69 AND THAT IS 18. TOTAL HOSPITALIZATIONS, 460. WE KNOW WE ARE AVERAGING ABOUT 11.7% THE HOSPITAL RATE AND THAT'S TO HOSPITALIZATIONS WITHIN A 14-DAY PERIOD. UNFORTUNATELY WE HAVE 77 DEATHS AND OUR FIDELITY RATE IS 2.0. POSITIVE SIZE, WE HAVE 2002 INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE RECOVERED FROM COVID. AND THE AGE RANGE WE RECOGNIZE WHERE THOSE RECOVERIES ARE OCCURRING IS BETWEEN 20 AND 29. WE ARE SEEING TOTAL POSITIVE CASES. ONE HOSPITALIZATION WITHIN 14 DAYS, ZERO DEATHS WITHIN 14 DAYS AND TWO PEOPLE, INDIVIDUALS ARE RECOVERING. TOTAL CASES, WE HAVE A HIGH INCIDENT OF CASES IN THE WESTWOOD AREA. BUT WHEN WE DRILL DOWN TO ZIP CODES, ZIP CODE OR 5211 -- 45205 AND 45204. THANK YOU. BEAU BIDN THANKS -- >> THANK YOU. CONDITIONER -- COMMISSIONER FEAR IS THE MASS MANDATE IS WORKING. TWO WEEKS AGO, THREE WEEKS AGO WHEN THERE WAS THAT SPIKE, WE ALL UNDERSTANDABLY GOT WORRIED ABOUT AND WE WERE SEEING IT ACROSS THE COUNTRY, THE HOSPITALIZATION AVERAGE GOT AS HIGH AS FOUR AND TODAY WE ARE SEEING ZERO, BUT IT HAS BEEN BOUNCING BETWEEN ONE AND TWO AND HAS BEEN TRENDING DOWN FROM TWO OR THREE WEEKS AGO. SO THE MASK MANDATE IS WORKING. IF YOU SEE WHAT'S HAPPENING AROUND THE COUNTRY, IT IS STILL GETTING WORSE. OUR NUMBERS ARE COMING DOWN. YOU SAW THE CHART A WEEK OR SO AGO. WE HAD A HUNDRED CASES IN ONE DAY. TODAY WE ARE LOOKING AT TWENTYSOMETHING, 40 SOMETHING. WE ARE DOWN IN THE 40'S. A WEEK AGO, IT'S IN THE HIGH 60'S. THE MASK IS WORKING. WHERE THE MASK. -- WHERE THE MASK. NEXT, WE WANT TO TALK ABOUT THE ALCOHOL SALE ORDER THE GOVERNOR AND THE LIQUOR COMMISSION PUT THEM TODAY. I WANT TO MAKE AN IMPORTANT DISTINCTION. THIS ORDER THAT WAS APPROVED IS NOT A HEALTH ORDER. IT'S A LIQUOR COMMISSION ORDER. AS A RESULT, LEGALLY, UNLIKE A LOT OF ORDERS WE ARE HAVING OUR HEALTH DEPARTMENT IN FORCE, THIS IS A DIFFERENT ANIMAL. THIS WILL BE ENFORCED BY THE POLICE. THE ORDER, AS I UNDERSTAND IT IS LIQUOR SALES HAVE TO STOP AT 10 P.M., BUT THE ESTABLISHMENT CAN STAY OPEN AND LIQUOR HAS TO BE OFF THE TABLE AT 11 P.M. CANDIDLY IF YOU ARE A BAR OR RESTAURANT OWNER, BE FOREWARNED. THERE COULD BE ENFORCERS IN YOUR FACILITY. NONETHELESS, WE CAN STILL CALL POLICE AND CHIEF ISAAC IS HERE TO TALK ABOUT THAT. >> THANK YOU, MAYOR CRANLEY. COMPLIANCE IS THE FIRST GOAL. SINCE THIS IS AN ORDER FROM THE LIQUOR COMMISSION, OUR OFFICERS WILL REPLAY -- WILL RESPOND BASED ON COMPLAINT TO BE IN VIOLATION, WE WILL DOCUMENT THAT. WE WILL PASS THE INFORMATION ON AND IT COULD POTENTIALLY RESULT IN ACTIONS AGAINST THE ESTABLISHMENT'S LIQUOR LICENSE. WE WILL TREAT IT THAT WAY. OUR OFFICERS WILL BE AVAILABLE AS WILL MEMBERS OF OUR VICE CONTROL SECTION. WHEN WE ARE DONE I WILL ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS THAT YOU HAVE. >> AS WE WILL BE DOING THIS FOR PUBLIC BENEFIT, WE ARE MAKING READILY AVAILABLE THE CONTACT TRACING INFORMATION WE HAVE. WE HAVE BARS AND NIGHTCLUBS THAT HAVE HIGH RATES OF VIOLATIONS. I JUST WANT TO READ THIS LIST OF BARS, BECAUSE THIS COMES UP A LOT. IS IT SAFE TO GO TO THE BANKS. IT IS CLEARLY, OVERWHELMINGLY ON THE EAST SIDE. IT IS FOLLOWED BY MOUNT LOOKOUT SQUARE, FOLLOWED BY PRIVILEGED, FOLLOWED BY ANIMATIONS, I WOULD BUY OAK TAVERN IN OAKLEY AND ANDY'S CAFE. FOR THE TOP FIVE, OAKLEY, HYDE PARK, AND I GUESS IS THE EAST END. SO, ANYONE WHO IS GOING OUT KNOWS THAT THEY HAVE RECEIVED COMPLAINTS ABOUT OVERCROWDING AND MASKS. ALONG THOSE LINES, WE GET THIS DATA AND WE ARE ALSO PUBLISHING THIS DATA ABOUT LARGE GATHERINGS. AND AS I MENTIONED, BARS AND NIGHTCLUBS HAVE BEEN THE LARGEST SOURCE OF GATHERINGS, FOLLOWED BY FAMILY GATHERINGS AND WE HAVE MORE DATA THAT ADDS TO THE DATA WE RELEASED TWO WEEKS AGO. THE RESULTS ARE BASICALLY THE SAME, THAT BARS AND NIGHTCLUBS, SPECIFICALLY THE ONES I JUST MENTIONED ARE THE TOP SOURCES OF LARGE GAP -- GATHERINGS. IT DOES NOT GUARANTEE THAT'S REALLY GOT IT. WE THINK THE PUBLIC IS ENTITLED TO THIS INFORMATION, FOLLOWED BY LARGE PRIVATE FAMILY GATHERINGS. BUT ALL OF THAT COMES FROM OUR CONTACT TRACING EFFORTS, WHICH WE STARTED WITH AND HAD IS A WONDERFUL HEALTH DEPARTMENT COMMITTED TO PUBLIC HEALTH, 400 YEARS AND LEADING THE NATION AS A HEALTH DEPARTMENT OF THAT SOURCE -- OF THAT SORT, BUT WE'VE NOT HAD A PANDEMIC LIKE THIS IN A VERY LONG TIME. LIKE EVERYONE ELSE, WE ARE RAMPING UP CONTACT TRACING'S CAPACITY AS QUICKLY AS WE CAN AND WE KNOW IT HAS NOT BEEN PERFECT. BUT WE ARE WORKING TO MAKE IT BETTER AND FASTER. DR. MAURICE FROM OUR HEALTH DEPARTMENT IS GOING TO TALK ABOUT OUR CONTACT TRACING EFFORTS. >> THANK YOU, MAYOR, AND GOOD MORNING, EVERYONE. I WANT TO TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT CONTACT TRACING. WE HAVE OUR INTERNAL TEAM, ALSO WITH THE OHIO DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH, OUTSTANDING THROUGH THE WHOLE PROCESS. WE HAVE HAD APPROXIMATELY 43 WHO HAVE BEEN WORKING WITH US TO DO CONTACT TRACING. ON MONDAY WE WILL HAVE AN ADDITIONAL 41 TO SUPPLEMENT THE PREVIOUS STAFF. BETWEEN OUR INTERNAL STAFF, OUR CODY H STAFF, AND OUR NEW CONTRACT HIRES WE WILL HAVE APPROXIMATELY 59 CONTACT TRACERS WORKING WITH US. WHAT THE CONTACT TRACERS ARE DOING IS ONCE WE GET NOTIFIED OF A POSITIVE CASE, WE GIVE THEM A CALL. THOSE QUESTIONS ASK ABOUT THEIR SYMPTOMS, WHAT THEIR EXPERIENCES BEEN, AND WE WANT TO KNOW WHO THEY HAVE THEN IN CLOSE CONTACT WITH BECAUSE THAT'S VERY IMPORTANT IN IT AND A FINE AND REDUCING THE RISK OF EXPOSURE AND TRANSMISSION IN THE COMMUNITY. ONCE YOU HAVE IDENTIFIED THERE ARE CLOSE CONTACTS, WE HAVE THE DISCUSSION WITH THEM THAT THEY NEED TO AARON DEAN FOR 14 DAYS AND WE MONITOR THEIR SYMPTOMS. AND WE HOPE THAT PEOPLE WILL STAY ASYMPTOMATIC, BUT IF THEY BECOME SYMPTOMATIC WE REFER FOR THEM TO THEIR PRIMARY CARE PROVIDER TO SEEK TESTING. THIS IS ALL IN THE DAY OF A CONTACT TRACER. WE URGE INDIVIDUALS WHO DO TEST POSITIVE THAT THEY TALK WITH US, JUST SO WE CAN HELP THE WHOLE PROCESS OVERALL. ARE THERE OTHER QUESTIONS? >> [INDISCERNIBLE] NEXT WEEK? >> OUR SCHOOL NURSES HAVE BEEN SUPPORTING THIS EFFORT, SO THEY WILL BE TRANSITIONING OFF. WE HAD APPROXIMATELY 25, AN EQUAL OF ABOUT 15. THEY WILL BE TRANSITIONING. 31 NEW HIRES WILL TAKE THEIR PLACE. THEY WILL BE PART OF THE TEAM OF 59. >> 31 PLUS OR 20? >> 59 TOTAL WILL BE NEXT WEEK. >> [INDISCERNIBLE] >> WE WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR QUESTIONS LATER. >> THANK YOU. MAYOR CRANLEY: THANK YOU, DR. A MIN. ADDITIONAL CONTACT TRACERS AND WE HIRED NEXT WEEK. WE STRIVE TO GET PEOPLE RESULTS FASTER AND FASTER. A COUPLE OTHER ITEMS THAT I WANTED TO TALK ABOUT TODAY, ONE IS, I THINK THIS IS FAIRLY OBVIOUS, BUT WE WANT TO BE EXPLICIT. AND IT'S SAD. THIS YEAR AS BEEN A YEAR TO NOT DO GREAT TRADITIONS. JUST TO BE 100% CLE, GATHERINGS ON THE RIVER. OBVIOUSLY THIS IS A MONTH AWAY. IT'S INCONCEIVABLE WE WOULD HAVE A KIND OF LARGE GATHERING DESPITE THE FACT THAT THE NUMBERS ARE GETTING THAT GREAT. ALSO I WANT EVERYONE TO KNOW I SIGNED AN EXECUTIVE ORDER THAT IS AVAILABLE TO ANY AND ALL SCHOOLS, THAT THE CITY IS AUTHORIZED TO TAKE ADDITIONAL MEASURES. THESE INCLUDE STREAMLINING APPROVALS FOR INSTALLATION OF MODULAR TRADE -- TRAILERS. TO IMPLEMENT SOCIAL DISTANCING FOR A SAFE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT. ESSENTIALLY THIS IS NEW SPACE IN A JAM IF AND WHEN THEY DECIDE TO DO ANY -- AND WE WANT THE SCHOOLS TO KNOW -- WE HAVE OFFERED OUR REC CENTERS FREE OF CHARGE, IF AND WHEN WE GET THEM INTO SOME LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS. WE KNOW THAT THAT PROBABLY MEANS MORE SPACE. WE WANT TO BE CRYSTAL CLEAR WE WILL MAKE SPACE AVAILABLE AND MAYBE THAT WILL BE HELPFUL I THINK THAT THAT IS ALL THAT WE WANTED TO MENTION TODAY. I'M HAPPY TO OPEN IT TO QUESTIONS. YOU HAVE THE QUESTION EARLIER? -- YOU HAD THE QUESTION EARLIER? >> [INDISCERNIBLE] MAYOR CRANLEY: YEAH, I THINK THAT IF YOU TEST POSITIVE, YOU WILL BE CALLED BY ONE OF OUR CONTACT TRACERS. YOUR ANSWERS WILL BE ANONYMOUS. WE WANT TO GET THAT INFORMATION IS IMPORTANT. NONE OF US WOULD WANT TO INFECT SOMEONE ELSE. THIS IS A HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS DISEASE. WE MAY ALL GET IT. WE CAN PUBLISH THIS DATA ABOUT THE KINDS OF PLACES TO AVOID UNTIL THERE IS A VACCINE FOR EVERYBODY. >> [INDISCERNIBLE] MAYOR CRANLEY: ANTONIO MAYBE? YEAH. >> WE HAVE HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO TALK WITH THESE PARTICULAR BARS. AS A MATTER OF FACT, THIS IS A LIST OF COMPLAINTS. IT INVOLVES SOCIAL DISTANCING AND GENER ADVISEMENT SPIRIT OF THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT WENT OUT TO THOSE PARTICULAR LOCATIONS, AND SPOKE WITH THE MANAGEMENT IN TERMS OF WHAT THE LOCAL ORDINANCE IS TO HELP THEM OUT WITH WHAT THE LAW IS. >> WAVE PEOPLE DO NOT REMEMBER WHAT THEY DID. >> THAT IS MORE OF A CONTRACT TRACING QUESTION. I DON'T KNOW IF SOMEONE WANTS TO -- DR. AMIN: WE JUST WANT WHATEVER INFORMATION PEOPLE CAN PROVIDE TO THE BEST OF THEIR ABILITY. >> THESE ARE THE OTHER PLACES, THE OTHER CITIES. >> WE ARE PULLING OUT OF THE MAYOR'S NEWS CONFERENCE. A COUPLE DIFFERENT THINGS CAME OUT OF THAT. >> THEY TALKED ABOUT HOW MASK WORKING IS WORKING. THEY ARE GOOD WIT -- HOW DO THEY GO ABOUT LETTING THEM KNOW. THE OTHER BIG ANNOUNCEMENT IS RIVER FEST. IT WILL NOT BE HAPPENING THIS YEAR, RIVER FEST. >> OUR TEAMS WILL HAVE MORE COVERAGE COMING UP AT NOON AND AT 11:00 LATER ON. WE WILL SEND YOU BACK TO PROGRAMMING AND SEE YO Advertisement Mayor singles out 6 Cincinnati bars for overcrowding, mask violations Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley singled out several bars Friday morning, saying the city has received a large number of coronavirus violation complaints against each. The city has received an "egregious amount" of mask and overcrowding complaints against six individual bars, Cranley said. "We are publishing and making readily available some of the contact tracing information we have about large gatherings and bars and nightclubs that have a high rate of violations for masks or for overcrowding," the mayor said. "It is clearly very overwhelmingly on the east side," Cranley said.
