Woman Learns Best Friend and Boyfriend Have Been Keeping a Secret From Her - Newsweek

When it comes to secrets, your best friend is nearly always an exception to the "don't tell anyone" rule, but would you be able to keep quiet if tasked with keeping a secret about them?

Danielle McGookin was put to the test when her best friend's boyfriend sent her a text assigning her a secret task so her BFF would get the surprise of her life.

The surprise was one McGookin would have to keep, as Blair Quinn revealed to her that he was planning on proposing to her best friend, Melissa Allan.

McGookin received a "random" text from Quinn in which he told her "Gonna need your assistance soon." He entrusted her to keep quiet so as not to ruin the surprise as he revealed his plans to "try and get a ring before me and Mel go on holiday."

Playing it safe, he knew McGookin would probably know Allan's taste better than anyone else. He requested she look online for a ring her best friend would like, with her, of course, stepping up to the plate.

Speaking to Newsweek, McGookin revealed: "When I first received the text I was absolutely over the moon, shocked and excited! Blair and I used to joke about him coming to me for advice on the ring when the time came, as we all knew a proposal was always going to happen, it was just a matter of when!

"I didn't know if he would ever actually come to me. I was so overwhelmed when he did...Knowing Mel will wear that ring on her finger forever and I was a part of the process is so special!"

Quinn's decision to put his trust in McGookin paid off, as she said, "Being best friends with Mel for 27 years, and also with Mel and Blair being together for almost 11 years, she had briefed me on the style of ring she liked for if the time came and I was asked for advice."

Her knowledge of what her friend wanted meant McGookin and Quinn were able to create a fully custom ring with a local jeweler to create the ring of Allan's dreams ahead of an upcoming trip, during which he planned to pop the question.

It's not just the bride-to-be who was shocked by the proposal.

"I didn't expect the proposal to come when it did, as Mel and Blair had actually just booked a last-minute holiday to Cyprus (six weeks before flying). I think that's also why Mel was so surprised, as it was such a short window to buy a ring and plan an engagement," McGookin said.

"Being a part of the process was so special and emotional for me. Keeping the secret from Mel was so hard, especially when she nearly self-sabotaged herself by not getting her nails done."

The bride, who was "too sleepy" to get her nails done ahead of the vacation, was so unaware of what was about to happen on her trip that she had even texted McGookin to say, "Hopefully, Blair doesn't propose lol."

McGookin's involvement went beyond the ring. She also set up a beautiful welcome-home surprise for the happy couple upon their return from vacation.

Speaking on her friend's involvement in the monumental life moment, Allan told Newsweek, "I feel like the luckiest girl in the world to have both Blair and Danielle in my life, who have gone above and beyond in relation to the engagement.

"I couldn't have picked a more perfect ring for myself, and the fact that it was custom-made makes it all that more special," she said.
