NCAA Transfer Portal: UVA's Bronco Mendenhall calls system broken, but singles out positive - 247Sports |
Posted: 25 May 2021 12:00 AM PDT ![]() The NCAA Transfer Portal has been one of the hottest topics of discussion over the course of the last year. The number of players that remain in the portal continues to rise following the NCAA's decision to grant a one-time exemption of immediate eligibility for transfers. The Virginia Cavaliers have been active in the transfer market since the arrival of Bronco Mendenhall and that's not expected to change. Late last week, Mendenhall appeared on Packer and Durham. Mendenhall was asked about his feelings on the transfer portal. He said that the system is currently broken. "Just to give us an exact reference point, today there are 2,330 players in the transfer portal in college football," said the UVA head coach. "2,330. That's not progress. That reflects a broken system to me. "Our assessment and selection processes as college football coaches, the way that young people make their decisions on what school they choose and why they choose it, that system right now isn't yielding the kind of staying power that we're hopeful for." Mendenhall said that both the players and the coaches share in the current state of affairs in college football's transfer market. It starts in the recruiting process. "I think even before we talk about those things, what recruiting really looks like, the integrity, the honesty, and substance and truth and transparency, I think we need to address that, so young people and their families can make the best choice. And then get what they said they were going to get that was presented to them by others. "There's that part, not only in the initial presentation but then in the resiliency and the stick-to-itiveness that we know is so important to having success." All in all, however, Mendenhall feels that the transfer portal puts more accountability on college coaches. That aspect of it, the UVA head coach feels, at least in concept, is a positive for college football. "In concept though, I don't have as much of an issue with it because it puts a lot of accountability back on us as head coach and how we run our programs, what kind of cultures we create, and how likely players are to stay and if they want to be around us and how do they trust us to fight through some of those adversities. "So there is a counterweight there to a bigger issue." |
